Remarkable Growth in Vegetable Farming Despite Challenges in Southern Ukraine
Agricultural producers in the Odessa region are expanding the areas dedicated to vegetable crops, but they still face several challenges.
Alla Stoyanova, the director of the Department of Agricultural Policy in the Odessa Regional State Administration, discussed these developments with the Ukrainian News Service.
“We are now second in Ukraine after Poltava in terms of pumpkin and watermelon cultivation. We have also made significant progress in vegetable cultivation, and today we are among the top ten regions in Ukraine,” she reported.
Tomato harvesting is already in full swing, with nearly 14,000 hectares of vegetable crops, of which 3,200 hectares are dedicated to tomatoes. Stoyanova noted that compared to the previous year, the vegetable cultivation area has increased by 1,000 hectares, primarily due to the expansion of tomato plantations.
The main challenges for vegetable farming in the Odessa region are a shortage of labor and financing. Despite state lending programs and foreign donor assistance, resources remain insufficient. Specifically, due to Russia’s blockade of Ukrainian food exports, Odessa’s agrarians are struggling to obtain the funds necessary to restart production.
“Today, the development of vegetable farming is about filling local budgets with taxes, providing growth opportunities for businesses, securing stable incomes in the face of climate challenges and water shortages, and creating new jobs for the population. Overall, it strengthens our regional economy,” emphasized Alla Stoyanova.
