Streamlined Plant Variety Registration Process Introduced by the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine
The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine has initiated a simplified procedure for the state registration of plant varieties registered in the European Union and the United States.
Now, farmers can easily incorporate the latest plant varieties into their agricultural practices, provided that these varieties have successfully undergone state testing in the EU or the USA and are included in the general catalog of EU varieties or confirmed by the International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV).
According to Taras Vysotskyi, the First Deputy Minister of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, Ukrainian farmers no longer need to wait for several years for their variety to pass through the examination process in Ukraine.
“We are simplifying the plant variety registration process to the maximum extent. Applicants submit an application for the registration of a new variety. The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food staff independently verify the presence of such a variety in the general catalog of EU varieties or UPOV. If its existence is confirmed, a decision on state registration is made within 15 days. Moreover, at the request of the applicant, a qualification examination of the variety may not be required,” explained Taras Vysotskyi.
The first 97 varieties of agricultural crops have already been included in the State Register of Plant Varieties of Ukraine through this simplified procedure.
This new registration mechanism was developed to align Ukrainian legislation with the provisions of the European Union in accordance with the Law of Ukraine “On Amendments to Certain Legislative Acts of Ukraine Regarding the Harmonization of Legislation in the Field of Plant Variety and Seed Production and Nursery Business with the Legislation of the European Union.” Source…
