Watermelon Season in Full Swing: 38 Thousand Tons Already Harvested
Amidst the ongoing ruzzian invasion in the Kherson Region, which was known as the heartland for watermelons and melon production, Ukraine has been experiencing a significant shortage of these beloved crops. Prices have surged to five times their usual rates due to the disruption caused by the warfare. However, adversity often breeds innovation, and other regions in Ukraine are seizing this opportunity by venturing into melon cultivation.
As of mid-August, the Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine reports that Ukrainian farmers have successfully harvested 50.4 thousand tons of melon crops. This figure represents an impressive 20.7% of the planned harvest. This remarkable achievement includes 38 thousand tons of watermelons and 12.4 thousand tons of cantaloupes.
The total harvested area for melon crops in Ukraine currently spans 6.2 thousand hectares, with an average yield of 81.5 tons per hectare. The highest production and yield of melon crops in August have been observed in Vinnytsia Oblast, where an astounding 12.6 thousand tons have already been harvested, boasting a remarkable yield of 140 tons per hectare.
While the warfare actions in the Kherson Region led to a shortage of these cherished fruits, it has also presented new opportunities for melon cultivation in other parts of Ukraine. Leading the charge, Odesa Oblast has dedicated 1.3 thousand hectares to watermelon cultivation, followed closely by Poltava Oblast with 0.7 thousand hectares, Vinnytsia Oblast with 0.6 thousand hectares, and Dnipropetrovsk Oblast with 0.5 thousand hectares.
Despite facing significant challenges brought on by the ruzzian invasion, Ukrainian farmers are demonstrating resilience and adaptability as they work towards replenishing the nation’s melon supply. This growth in melon crop cultivation is not only addressing the immediate shortage but also diversifying Ukraine’s agricultural landscape, contributing to regional development and economic stability. As Ukraine continues to navigate the complexities of the ongoing warfare, these efforts in melon farming serve as a testament to the nation’s determination to overcome adversity and foster agricultural innovation.
