Ukraine’s Onion Market Continues Price Decline

For the third consecutive month, Ukraine has been experiencing a decline in onion prices for the 2023 harvest, report analysts from the EastFruit project. The beginning of August saw a reinforcement of the previously established negative price trends, with wholesale onion prices dropping to the range of 7-12 UAH per kilogram ($0.19-0.32 per kilogram). To put this into perspective, just last week, one of Ukraine’s staple vegetables was being sold for over 25% higher, at prices ranging from 8-15 UAH per kilogram ($0.21-0.40 per kilogram).

This rapid drop in onion prices in Ukraine is attributed to a significant increase in product supply on the market. The harvest campaign across the country’s regions is currently in full swing.

If current price trends persist on Ukraine’s domestic market over the next 2-3 weeks, wholesale onion prices for this season may drop below the five-year average.

Producers indicate that many of them have yet to complete the onion harvest from their fields. This suggests that the supply of onions on the market is likely to continue increasing for at least the next 2-3 weeks, if not longer. Additionally, farmers note that the current weather conditions in Ukraine are conducive to successful harvesting, which, in their opinion, will not result in significant product losses during storage.

According to EastFruit analysts, commercial producers and newcomers to the onion business in different regions of the country have significantly expanded onion cultivation areas in the current season. This expansion could directly contribute to the strengthening of negative price trends in this market segment in the future.
