Ukrainian agricultural producers have managed to stabilize the cabbage market and bring volumes almost to pre-war levels by increasing the acreage.
As stated in the report of the wholesale market of agricultural products “Shuvar”, this situation is confirmed by the prices of cabbage.
As of the beginning of October 2023, the average price of white cabbage on the wholesale market is 15% lower than last year’s selling prices for cabbage in the same period.
“According to farmers, since the beginning of October, there has been a slight increase in demand for cabbage. This is primarily explained by seasonal factors – the start of the pickled cabbage season and the growing demand for raw materials. Last week, the price of white cabbage has increased on average by 1-1.5 UAH – to the level of 6-8 UAH/kg, but it still remains lower than it was recorded in the same period last year. At the moment, the price remains market-driven,” says Tetyana Popovych, Head of the Marketing Department of the “Shuvar” market.
Farmers anticipate that further price growth may occur throughout October-November, which will also be caused by the fact that the main volumes of the product are already almost sold out, consequently, the supply on the market will gradually decrease.
Already from the end of January to the beginning of February, depending on weather conditions, farmers will start opening storage facilities and selling cabbage intended for storage.
Taking into account the rise in energy prices and the current situation in the country, the costs of storing products in warehouses may also become an additional factor in price increases. However, farmers do not currently see any prerequisites for shortages or significant price hikes.
