In the wake of the ongoing conflict, approximately 20% of Ukraine’s agricultural lands have become unsuitable for cultivation, according to statements from Taras Vysotskyi, the first deputy minister of agrarian policy.
This revelation emerged during a telethon titled “United News,” as reported by Ukrinform.
Mr.Vysotskyi pointed out that this 20% reduction in available lands for cultivation is a direct consequence of the hostilities, with the situation being notably worse compared to 2021. However, he emphasized that despite this setback, there is no immediate cause for alarm. This is primarily due to Ukrainians consuming agricultural products at a rate three times lower than their domestic production. Consequently, a considerable portion of the agricultural output is expected to be directed towards export markets this year.
One of the crucial aspects that Vysotskyi addressed was the fertilizers’ supply in the Ukrainian market. Contrary to concerns, he assured that there is no shortage, particularly for nitrogen fertilizers, which are mostly produced domestically. The efficient use of fertilizers and adherence to technological processes are deemed essential for sustaining agricultural productivity.
Expressing gratitude, Vysotskyi thanked the fertilizer producers for their significant contributions to ensuring an adequate supply. Their efforts have played a vital role in maintaining stability in the agricultural sector despite the challenges posed by the conflict.
Additionally, the Ukrainian government has outlined key priorities for supporting farmers in 2023. These include initiatives such as humanitarian demining, preferential lending programs, and grant schemes. These efforts aim to bolster the resilience of the agricultural industry and mitigate the impact of the war on Ukraine’s vital sector.
As a parallel development, Ukrainian sappers have been actively employing drones for demining operations, surpassing 800 missions this year alone. These technological advancements underscore the nation’s commitment to addressing challenges on multiple fronts and ensuring the continued functioning of essential sectors despite the adversities posed by the conflict.
