Due to the war, the labor shortage in horticulture has intensified, especially as many farms have expanded their vegetable areas, which also require a significant workforce.
Alexander Baran, an agronomist from the horticulture department of the “Agricultural Company 2004” under the Vitagro holding (Khmelnytskyi region), shared this information in an interview with the magazine “Horticulture in Ukrainian.”
“The problem with people is that we transport them for harvesting more than 100 km. If there was an opportunity to find 150-200 workers, we would have recruited them,” he noted. “We communicate with colleagues, for example, from the Horticultural Farm ‘Hads,’ and everyone faces the same problem – the need for labor. I assume that many have turned to vegetables this year, including us. We planted 15 hectares of onions, 20 hectares of carrots, and 15 hectares of beets.”
It’s worth mentioning, that due to a shortage of personnel, the State Enterprise “Arsi Agro” in the Odesa region harvested grapes 15-20% longer than usual.
